Raleigh's Piedmont landscape sits on red clay over saprolite, rolling terrain that drains slowly and puts real stress on fence posts, especially after heavy rain. Whether you're in an established neighborhood near downtown or a fast-growing subdivision where HOA rules govern every board, the same challenge holds: wood fails at the ground line, posts lean in wet clay, and gates drag or come off their hinges when the ground shifts.

Since 2016, Durham Fence Company has been the fence and gate contractor Raleigh homeowners and property managers call when they need honest work, not sales talk. We install wood, vinyl, chain link, and ornamental iron fencing. We repair storm damage, replace failed posts, and build gates that work. We know the clay, the slopes, and the HOA architectural standards that govern your fence line.

Fencing and Gates in Raleigh (27609)

Raleigh's housing stock runs from in-town brick colonials with tight lot lines to suburban master-planned communities where deed restrictions and HOA rules set fence height, material, and color. The red clay soil here holds water and drains slowly. Posts set in tamped earth fail; posts set in concrete last. Sloped lots are common enough that the racked-versus-stepped decision is real on most jobs, not an exception. Summer thunderstorms and the inland remnants of Atlantic hurricanes bring down fence runs and snap gate hinges. Winter ice and wet clay are when a marginal post finally gives way.

We've been installing and repairing fences across Durham and surrounding areas since 2016. We work from your existing survey, coordinate with your HOA when architectural approval is required, and always call 811 for utility locates before we dig. Our team is fully insured, with general liability and workers' compensation coverage. We're AFA Member Installers through the American Fence Association.

How a Fence or Gate Job Works in Raleigh

Step 1: You call us at (984) 380-1829 or request a free on-site assessment. We come out, walk your property, measure the fence line, note the slope and soil, and talk through what you want. If HOA approval is required, we tell you upfront. If a permit is needed, we'll coordinate with the city or county building department. We give you a straight estimate with no surprises.

Step 2: Once you approve the estimate, we schedule the work. Our crews mark the fence line with you present, call 811 for utility locates, and set posts in concrete. For wood or vinyl, we install rails and pickets or boards, cap and trim, and finish as specified. For chain link, we tension the mesh and hang the gate. For ornamental iron, we bolt and weld. On sloped lots, we rack or step the fence as the terrain demands. On tight lots near power lines or in dense subdivisions, we work carefully and efficiently.

Step 3: We clean up debris, haul away old materials, and walk the fence with you. Your property is left clean. Gates are tested and adjusted before we leave.

Pricing depends on material, terrain, and what you're starting with. Wood and privacy fence installation runs from $29 per linear foot; vinyl from $40 per foot; chain link from $18 per foot; ornamental iron from $44 per foot. Pool fencing starts at $36 per foot. Farm and ranch fencing runs from $13 per foot. Repair work starts at $475 for post repair or gate work. Fence replacement and removal starts at $2,500. Storm damage assessment is free. Automatic and driveway gates start at $2,900. The key cost factors are the material you choose, the length of the run, whether the ground is level or sloped, soil conditions, and what you're removing or replacing. Call us at (984) 380-1829 for a free estimate. We'll walk your property, measure, and give you a realistic number before any work begins.

Why do fence posts fail in Raleigh?
The red clay soil here holds water and drains slowly. After heavy rain, posts sit wet at the ground line. Untreated wood and even pressure-treated pine fail faster in wet clay than in well-draining soil. Posts set in concrete last much longer than posts set in tamped earth. The problem accelerates in winter when ice heaves the ground. We replace failed posts and set new ones in concrete to prevent the same failure.
What should I do if a storm knocks down my fence?
Call us at (984) 380-1829 for a free damage assessment. We'll photograph the damage, document what failed and why, and give you an honest repair or replacement estimate. We can help you document the damage for an insurance claim. Storm repair is priced honestly, never with fear or pressure. If repair makes sense, we say so. If replacement is the better spend, we tell you that too.
Do I need a permit to install a fence in Raleigh?
Permit requirements vary by jurisdiction. In some areas of Raleigh and the surrounding Durham region, permits are required; in others, they are not. Fence height, setback, and corner-visibility rules are set by the city or county and differ across the area. If your property is in a master-planned community, your HOA may govern height, material, and color. We coordinate with the building department and your HOA before we start. Call us and we'll tell you what applies to your address.
What is the difference between racked and stepped fence installation?
On sloped lots, racked installation tilts the fence panels to follow the slope, keeping the bottom edge parallel to the ground. Stepped installation keeps the panels vertical and creates a stair-step line at the bottom. Racked fence looks cleaner on moderate slopes; stepped fence is stronger on steep slopes and leaves no gap at the base. We assess your slope and recommend the right method for your terrain and the look you want.
My HOA requires approval before I install a fence. How does that work?
We've coordinated with HOAs across Raleigh and the Durham area many times. You or we submit the fence plan (material, height, color, location) to your architectural control committee. They approve or ask for changes. Once approved, we proceed with the installation. We know the common HOA rules and can help you plan a fence that meets the standards. Bring your deed restrictions or HOA guidelines to your initial consultation.
Are your crews fully insured?
Yes. We carry general liability and workers' compensation insurance. We can provide a certificate of insurance on request. All work is performed by our team, and every job is covered.
What's the best time of year to install a fence in Raleigh?
Spring and early summer are peak installation season when the ground is workable and the weather is predictable. We install fences year-round, though. Winter and early spring can be wet, but the ground rarely freezes deep enough to stop digging. Summer thunderstorms and hurricane remnants (June through November) drive emergency repair work. If you need a fence now, we can usually fit you in. Call us at (984) 380-1829 to schedule.
